Nutrition Research

The development, improvement and evaluation of feeds for aquaculture and the ornamental industry is an important focus at the “Center for Aquaculture Research“ (ZAF). The primary research objectives are alternative resources, additives, feed design and live feed with the focus on effects on target species as well as economic viability, sustainability and availability of resources.

Alternative Resources

Alternative resources as a substitute for fish meal and fish oil are basic requirements for a sustainable growth of the aqua- culture industry. In the ZAF innovative animal and vegetable components are tes-ted for their physiological, economic and ecological properties.

Additives

The use of nutritional additives to increase growth and health of cultured animals beca-me more important in agriculture but also recently in aquaculture and the ornamental sector. These new additives are tested, rela-ted to their effects on immune competence, state of health, food conversion and stress tolerance, according to scientific criteria.

Feed Design

For an optimum feed intake and conversion the food has to be adapted to the individual demand of the target species. Chemical composition, physical characteristics (e.g. density, size stability) as well as sensory properties will be adjusted for this purpose.

Live feed

In the production cycle of aquatic organisms the highest mortality occurs in the larval state. This is mainly related to an insufficient nutrient supply. Therefore we test new live feed species and develop new dry feeds es-pecially for the weaning phase.
