Early detection of corrosive, microbial processes for monitoring the condition of hydraulic steel structures (Micronaut Enviro)

Corrosion of steel hydraulic structures is a well-known and, moreover, widespread material damage, which generates high cost, and afforts in maintenance and logistics. In addition to the galvanic corrosion microbial influenced or induced corrosion (MIC) can occur. The extent of this influence, however, is so far difficult to quantify, mainly due to the variability of biological environmental parameters. It is the goal of the project to realize the monitoring of MIC at its early stages using a colorimetric multiwell assay. In this joint project, we work together with Merlin Diagnostics GmbH.

imare is engaged in this context with the establishment of a model environment for laboratory validation of microbially induced corrosion rates. In addition, the design of field systems and the analysis and interpretation of natural biological loads.
