Biocide-free fouling protection for mariculture (no copper)

Plant and animal growth (biofouling) on solid substrates is a ubiquitous process in aquatic habitats, which is also observed in mariculture. In conventional fish farming marine growth is prevented by applying copper-containing dip coatings. The project 'Biocide-Free Fouling Protection for Mariculture' aims to increase the knowledge about the ecological impact of new coatings in combination with mechanical cleaning steps.

The research program includes chemical and physical analyzes, experiments in a flow channel combined with cleaning procedures and immersion test in the field and ecological simulations. The results are discussed in order to understand the impact in changing technologies and the benefit for organic fish farming.
